Gert Cruywagen is the director of risk of the Tsogo Sun Group, Africa’s largest owner and operator of hotels and casinos, with 123 hotels in Africa and the Middle East, as well as 14 casinos across South Africa. He serves on the audit and risk committee and social and ethics committee of the main company, as well as on the business units’ audit and risk committees and those of the pension and medical funds. He is an executive director of Tsogosure Insurance Company based in the Isle of Man and serves as a trustee (and member of the audit and risk committees) of the Tsogo Sun Pension Fund and the Tsogo Sun Medical Scheme.

Cruywagen is a permanent member of the King Committee on Corporate Governance. He was the convenor of the risk work group of King 2 and of King 3, a role he will repeat for King 4. He was the principal author of the chapter on “The Governance of Risk” of King 3.

Cruywagen serves as a non-executive independent director of the aerospace and defense group Denel SOC Limited, where he chairs the audit and risk committee and also serves on social and ethics committee. He is the current chairman of Denel Aerostructures and the past chairman of ammunition manufacturer PMP, and a past director of SA largest time share resort Dikhololo. He also serves as independent non-executive director of Accelerate Property Fund, and he serves on their audit and risk committee and is the chairman of the investment committee. He is a member of the client advisory board of Zurich Financial Services and of the Africa advisory board of Allianz Insurance.

He is the immediate past-chairperson of the group risk governance committee of the city of Johannesburg. He serves on the advisory board of the International Federation of Risk and Insurance Management Associations (IFRIMA) as the vice president for Africa. He chairs the South African Technical Committee TC262 for the review of ISO 31000, and he is the South African representative on the Risk Management Global Alignment Advisory Group.

Cruywagen has a number of qualifications from local and international universities, including a MBSc, a PMD and a PhD. He is a fellow of the Institute of Directors in South Africa (IoDSA) and a fellow of the Institute of Risk Management of South Africa (IRMSA). He is an honorary life member of the Institute of Risk Management (UK) and an honorary life member of the Institute of Risk Management of South Africa, an honorary member of the Russian Risk Management Association; a founder member and honorary member of the Polish Risk Management Association; as well as a past chairman of the South African Risk and Insurance Management Association (SARIMA). He is also a member of RIMS (USA).

He was voted as South Africa’s “Risk Manager of the Year” for 2009, an honor also awarded to him in 2001. He is the founder and chairman of the Cruywagen-IRMSA Risk Foundation; a non-profit body that facilitates risk laboratories, risk training, internships and exchange programs for students in the disciplines of risk.

During the past year, he has delivered training addresses to the World Bank in Washington, DC, the SA Reserve Bank, the SA Army Planning Forum and the generals of the SANDF. He lectured on risk management at four different universities in South Africa as well as at the Illinois State University in the U.S. He is a sought-after speaker at risk management conferences and seminars, both locally and internationally. He delivered the keynote addresses at various international conferences on the topic “Jungle Risk Management – Risk Lessons from the Bush,” based on his book with the same title. Over the past few years, he has delivered presentations at company events, seminars and conferences in Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands, Canada, Sweden, Portugal, Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Russia, Kenya, Namibia, the U.S., the U.K. and South Africa.
