Jeff Pettegrew, Widely Acclaimed Insurance Executive, Joins ITL as Chief Imagination Officer

Menlo Park, CA — July 7, 2014 — Insurance Thought Leadership (ITL), a digital publishing platform that promotes thought leadership in insurance and risk management, today announced that noted insurance executive and thought leader Jeff Pettegrew has joined ITL as its Chief Imagination Officer.

Mr. Pettegrew, who has exhibited tremendous creativity throughout his career, will help ITL refine its existing capabilities, generate new offerings such as conferences and, drawing on his extensive connections, find new thought leaders who will be ambassadors for the platform and the ideas that are being shaped there. He will also be a principal spokesman for ITL, expanding his already significant presence at major conferences.

According to Paul Carroll, CEO and editor-in-chief of ITL, “I was delighted when Jeff told us he wasn’t just going to slip into retirement but wanted to come work with us full-time. To attract someone of his caliber while we are still at a relatively early stage is both a great endorsement of the progress we’ve made and a huge assist. Mr. Pettegrew said, “I just believe so much in what ITL is doing. Insurance is going through so much change, and there needs to be a place where the smartest people can share the best ideas. ITL is that place. Having learned so much over the past 40 years, I want to pass along that knowledge and leave a legacy, and I think I can do that through ITL.”

Prior to his corporate experience, Jeff was Chief Administrative Officer, 1980-1991, of the Contra Costa Municipal Risk Management Insurance Authority, where he pioneered one of the nation’s first fully self-insured joint powers authority risk management pool’s to provide workers comp, liability, property, safety and health coverage for 18 municipalities. Earlier in his career, he served as the first risk manager for the cities of Walnut Creek and Sunnyvale.

Throughout his career, Mr. Pettegrew has been a frequent presenter at the biggest conferences in the country and has appeared on CNN and “60 Minutes” regarding complex risk management issues. He has taught doctoral-level classes in insurance at Golden Gate University and for ARM (Associate in Risk Management) courses. Mr. Pettegrew has served as a risk management consultant and expert witness, drawing on his expertise in designing complex self-insured programs for both private and public entities throughout the U.S.

Other highlights from Mr. Pettegrew’s career to date include:

  • Being named “Risk Manager of the Year” by Business Insurance magazine in 1989;
  • Serving as chairman of the Business Insurance National Workers Compensation/ Disability Conference for nine years;
  • Serving as president of: Public Agency Risk Managers Association (PARMA), California Joint Powers Association (CAJPA) and the Golden Gate Chapter of the Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS).
